The Colorado Avalanche selected David Aebischer in the sixth round of 1997 NHL Draft. However, he wasn't in Pittsburgh to hear his name called. Aebischer said he was actually asleep at home in Switzerland. "Some reporter called my house at 9am," he said. The reporter was from Aebischer's hometown, asking about him being drafter to the Avalanche. "I thought it was a joke," Aebischer laughed.
When David found out he had actually been drafter to the Avalanche he said he, "was really happy." He flew to America for two weeks of training camp before he had to make the decision to sign to the team. Once he signed, he ended up moving straight to America to begin his pro hockey career.
